Scouting Notes v2
My Responsibilities: Feature Prioritization | Discovery | Product Design, web | User Research
We knew our first iteration of notes would need to be improved—there was so much more value to provide beyond writing and sharing a note for a field.
As part of a large unification effort to bring three digital products offerings into one, I served as Initiative Design Champion for Scouting Notes v2 on web. This included the addition of new note types and more robust search and filtering options:
Threat ID, which can identify potential pests and crop issues
Yield Estimate, which uses a photo of an ear of corn to estimate yield for an entire field
The ability to search notes across an entire farming operation’s acres, not just per field
One of the biggest updates we wanted to make as part of our unification efforts was to increase the overall visibility of scouting notes. Our first release only allowed users to add and view notes from the map of an individual field; there was no way to see all of the notes that had been added across and entire farming operation (typically made up of a dozen fields or more).
After gathering stakeholder feedback and reviewing existing solutions, we created an addition to the Field List UI to allow users to browse both a list of all their notes as well as a geospatial view of all the note pins across their operation.
We also added a list view of notes at the field level to provide users with another method of tracking down the note they wanted to find for a field.
Lastly, we added additional note types (as described above), denoted by unique iconography and pin colors.
Seed reps and farmers need efficient, valuable ways to document what’s happening on their farming operations. By iterating and improving upon Scouting Notes v1, we were able to increase efficiency and value by not only making notes easier to make and search, but also bringing in additional note types that get right at the heart of what scouting is about: identifying issues early, and understanding what the end of the season may look like in terms of yield.
